NDP slams gov’t on nixed green tax exemptions

By Christine Rumleskie

The B.C. NDP is bashing the Government for eliminating a tax-exemption for energy-saving items.

NDP Environment Critic and MLA for Victoria, Rob Fleming, explains March 31st is the final day to take advantage of the PST exemption on green and Energy Star items.

He says that in order to make way for the new blended tax, the PST policy is being surrendered to Ottawa, and now green exemptions will not apply starting April 1st.

Included in the nixed tax incentives are high efficiency window and doors, insulation products and energy efficient furnaces.

Just this week, Finance Minister Colin Hansen introduced HST legislation.

Fleming insists the legislation is already doing more harm then good.

The HST is set to come into effect on July 1st of this year.
