Generals outrun Caribous

The Bentley Generals bounced back in a big way on Wednesday night, as they comfortably defeated the Clarenville Caribous in the final game of the Allan Cup round robin.

After losing their opening game of the tournament to the host Flyers on Monday, the Generals came looking for redemption, and posted a 7-2 win over Clarenville.

Tyler Haarstad opened the scoring, when he shovelled a Chris Martini rebound past Jason Churchill six minutes into the game. By the end of the first period, the Generals were up 3-0, despite having taken five penalties, compared to one for the Caribous. The Generals looked exceptional in their own zone all night, blocking shots effectively, and taking back possession with a dominating performance in the faceoff circle.

With Bentley up 5-1 after the second period, the Caribous showed good character in the third period, as they carried some of the play, and managed to control the puck in the Bentley zone for a few sporadic bursts.

At the final buzzer, the Generals led 7-2, and had killed off a dozen powerplays.

Diarmuid Kelly was named Bentley’s player of the game, for his three goal performance. Also scoring for the Generals were Tyler Haarstad, Sean Robertson, Travis Brigley, and Jon Hobson. Chris Peach and Mitch Oake responded for the Caribous.

The Caribous have little time to recover, with a quarterfinal matchup against the South East Prairie Thunder set for 2 p.m. on Thursday. The Generals will take on the Powell River Regals in the other quarterfinal, at 8 p.m.
