Martin and Bernard win Players' Championship in D.C.

Kevin Martin captured the final grand slam curling event of the season, beating Brad Gushue in the championship final of the Grey Power Players’ Championship.

The Olympic gold-medallist needed an extra-end to beat team Gushue 8-7 on Sunday in Dawson Creek.

With the win, Martin’s rink claims the Capital One Cup, as the top team in the 2009-2010 Grand Slam of curling, earning a $50,000 dollar bonus.

On the women’s side, Cheryl Bernard bounced back from an early loss to win the Grey Power Championship, beating Calgary’s Crystal Webster 6-4 in Saturday’s final.

The win in the Grey Power Players’ Championship also gives Bernard the overal Capital One Cup, edging Jennifer Jones and Kelly Scott, who finish second and third in the overall standings.
