Olympic medallists to curl in Dawson Creek

By Jon Zacks

Olympic Gold-medallist Kevin Martin joins an impressive lineup at the Grey Power Players’ Championship next week in Dawson Creek.

Running from April 13-18 at the Encana Events Centre, the men’s field includes not only Martin’s rink, but also Kevin Koe, Glenn Howard, Brad Gushue, and Randy Ferbey. On the women’s side, Canadian champ Jennifer Jones joins Cheryl Bernard, Shannon Kleibrink, Kelly Scott, and many others (see the full field at http://www.grandslamofcurling.com/blog/mens-womens-grey-power-players-championship-draw-schedule-announced).

Speaking with Moose FM on Friday, Kevin Martin said he’s looking forward to curling in Dawson Creek, particularly because much of his wife’s family hails from the Mile Zero City, and other parts of the Peace Region. “I’ll definitely be busy with family and friends, for sure” he laughs, adding “I don’t get up to that area very often, so I’m looking forward to this week.”

He also points out that the Players’ Championship is an important event for curlers on the tour. “The Grand Slam is the yard stick that’s going to measure how well your team did.”

Giving the event a little more weight, teams will also be battling for major cash prizes, including a $45,000 first prize.
