Possible Cause of Weekend Apartment Fire

Fort St. John’s Deputy Fire Chief now says the blaze that destroyed an apartment on 93rd avenue Friday night, across the street from Sobey’s, may have started on the balconey of one of the suites…

Curtis Redpath says, the ruins of the building are still, far too dangerous, for a thorough investigation to be conducted….but he adds, something on a balconey, perhaps a bar-be-que, may have been the root cause of the fire…

He’s also confirmed he has received a number of calls suggesting the fire alarm system didn’t go off…but he says there may be a good explanation for that…

About 60 tenants were left looking for a new place to live and began today meeting with Sterling Management officials to try and find new accomodation.

The company believes it has enough vacancies in other buildings throughout the city to meet their demands, but many of them have associated problems, because their belongings were not insured.

The fire followed on the heels of another apartment fire, which was punctuated by an explosion in one suite, and has left police speculating drug activity “may” have been the cause.

Thus, the fire department has no comment on the nature of that fire on 102nd avenue, between 98th and 100th streets…and police are taking public information assistance calls at 250-787-8140 and 1-800-222-8477.

The deputy chief does say however, there’s absolutely no indication of any connection between the two fires.
