Wind projects rejected by B.C. Hydro

By Christine Rumleskie

B.C. Hydro has turned down two wind projects proposed for a pair of South Peace communities.

Victoria-based Aeolis Wind Power was notified in March that both the Thunder Mountain Wind Project and the Hackney Hills Wind Project will not be awarded purchase agreements with B.C. Hydro.

The company was eyeing an area near Tumbler Ridge for the Thunder Mountain project, and an area near Chetwynd for the Hackney Hills project.

Aeolis declined an interview, but spokesperson Colleen Brown indicated that while the company is disappointed, it will continue to prepare for future energy calls.

Earlier this year, the Hackney Hills wind project in particular garnered some negative attention from Saulteau First Nations, which voiced its concerns regarding the project’s impact on culturally-significant land.

Conversely, the Hackney Hills wind project had several First Nations allies, including the Halfway River First Nations, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Aeolis in 2009.

B.C. Hydro Spokesperson Dag Sharman wouldn’t comment on specific proposals, but says there are a number of reasons why a project can be eliminated from B.C. Hydro’s selection list.

He says proponents are invited to resubmit applications in upcoming calls for clean power.

Brown says Aeolis Wind Power is confident that its two wind projects will be succussful in upcoming power-call processes.
