Now that Fort St. John has been named a “solar community,” it will receive five thousand dollars in funding as it pursues a number of new initiatives aimed at promoting solar solutions.
The city receives about two thousand hours of sunshine a year, and city council has been taking an active role in promoting energy conservation and emissions reductions, through the development of the Community Energy and Emissions Plan, and admendments to the Official Community Plan.
Among the initiatves underway are the placement of a dozen bus shelters equipped with solar lighting…solar lighting for a number of pedestrian crossing signs…and the installation of a solar hot water system at City Hall.
In addition, the recently adopted Building Bylaw now offers green incentives in the form of rebates, for new construction and renovations.
The increased use of solar energy technology is part of the Campbell government’s initiative, for a 33 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
