The North Peace MLA wants to clear up what he calls misconceptions about the Harmonized Sales Tax.

Pat Pimm spoke to members of the Fort St. John and District Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon on Tuesday.

Pimm kicked his speech off by explaining how the HST will eliminate embedded taxes in manufactured goods.

He gave the example of a wooden chair made in British Columbia. He says the PST is engraved in every process from tree-cutting to selling the actual chair. Then the customer, he says, pays for that embedded tax.

But with the HST, Pimm says each person involved with getting that chair to the consumer, will get to reclaim the tax.

Pimm says there will be no added taxes to things like gas or heat.

Meanwhile, former B.C. Premier Bill Vander Zalm has been collecting signatures to bring down the controversial blended tax.

Pimm says he doesn’t know what will happen if Vander Zalm succeeds in getting 10% of the registered voters’ signatures in each riding before July 1st.

But, he says there’s a lot of support for the HST, including the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the B.C. Agriculture Council and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

The Fort St. John Chamber of Commerce has not taken an official stance on the HST.
