North Central Government Association holds annual meeting

By Adam Reaburn

Despite a motion by Fort Nelson Mayor Bill Streeper to remove Doug Roper from the North Central Local Government Association, Roper will remain on as a director.

On April 26th, Council from the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality voted Councillor Roper out as their representative.  Even with that decision, Roper will still be a Director-at-Large following elections at the organizations annual meeting in Smithers.

The new president of the NCLGA will be Dawson Creek Mayor Mike Bernier.  Bernier has replaced Karen Goodings from the Peace River Regional District.  Councillor Bruce Christensen of Fort St. John will remain a member of the NCLGA Executive Board as the Peace River Regional Representative.

Each year representatives from communities in the NCLGA meet to pass resolutions that the organization will petition the Union of BC Municipalities and the Province of BC to enact.  Some of the resolutions brought forward this year include

  • Encouraging tax incentives to encourage growth in the alternative energy industry
  • Lobby to re-instate Government Gaming Grants for non-profit groups
  • Lobbying the different levels of government in order to see 1% of the HST come back to local municipalities
  • Make winter snow tires mandatory in the Province of BC
