Council mulls outdoor stage

A new permanent outdoor community stage could be coming to Fort St. John.

Fort St. John was declared “music capital of Northern British Columbia” in 2009, but the City does not have a permanent outdoor music venue.

A delegation addressed Fort St. John City Council last week to get support for the project.

One of the delegates, Scott Fraser, says the stage would be available for various types of artists, including musicians and dancers, and would potentially be located in Centennial Park.

The capacity of the area is estimated to be around 500 people, including both standing and seating areas.

Councillor Lori Ackerman says she likes the idea of creating an outdoor stage, but wonders if it should be built in a different location.

Mayor Bruce Lantz also likes the idea, but admits that some details still need to be worked out.

City staff will now work to provide a report to council on the proposal, which could include impacts of the stage on other park activities.

Fraser says the total cost of the project is currently unknown.
