The RCMP have called off their search for a man who fell into the Liard River on Sunday.

Fort Liard resident Isadore Lomen had been at a bush camp when he fell out of his boat, and into the river, 36 km south of the NWT/BC border.

Police say the 66 year-old was last seen by his wife, as he stuggled to stay afloat. However, police say his wife couldn’t get help until about 5 p.m., when she flagged down a passing riverboater, who later notified authorities.

The search of the murky waters, which had involved at least 11 boats, aircraft, RCMP members, and search and rescue personel, was called off on Tuesday afternoon.

The search could start again in 7 to 10 days, at which time an aircraft or boat would be used.

Sgt. Wayne Norris with the RCMP says "everyone needs to equip their boat with proper life jackets and they are only effective if worn properly."
