Two months ahead of schedule, Vancouver based Western Coal Corporation has confirmed it will extend the life of its Willow Creek mine near Chetwynd due to an 88 per cent increase in estimated coal reserves.
The end result is expected to be the annual production of 1.7 million tonnes of coal over a 13-year mine life.
The mine’s processing plant and rail-loading facility will also be expanded by late next year.
Once that’s completed the processing and rail infrastructure should then be able to handle 3.7 million tonnes of coal a year.
That will eliminate the need to construct a plant and load-out facility at the nearby Brule mine.
