Changes coming to municipal election laws

The BC government will implement 31 recommendations made by a task force on municipal election rules.

The hope is the new rules will be in place by the next municipal election in Nov., 2011.

In addition to limits on campaign expenses and third party advertising, the task force also recommends banning anonymous contributions and shortening the time for filing campaign finance disclosure statements.

Fort St. John Mayor Bruce Lantz thinks the changes are a good idea.

Another recommendation is to lengthen municipal council terms to four years from the current three year term.
