Fort St. John RCMP have arrested one youth in connection with several fires on July 9th.

Shortly after 10pm on Friday July 9th, the Fort St. John Fire Department and RCMP were called to two houses on fire on 82nd street behind the Peace Country Trailer Park.  The fire started in a house that was under construction and quickly spread to one adjacent house.   A third home next to the  fire was also suffered minor damage.

Crown Counsel has charged the youth with several offences. The youth has been charged with three counts of arson; damage to property, because three homes were damaged in the main fire.   The youth is also being charged with two other small fires that occurred that night, both of which caused minimal damage.

Below is a complete list of charges:

  • Three counts of arson: disregard for human life
  • Two counts of arson: damage to property
  • One count of mischief
  • One count of common nuisance

The RCMP can’t release the name of the youth under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth will be held in custody until their next court hearing this September.

Shortly after the fire, the RCMP stated they were looking for two suspects both approximately 15 years of age.   At this time, Crown Counsel has not determined if they will be pressing any charges against the second youth.
