Youth are learning from elders in Nenan event

The Nenan Dane zaa Deh Zona Child and Family Services are hosting their second annual youth and elders gathering.

The gathering is organized to celebrate cultural teachings, traditional practices and ceremonies passed between elders and youth.

Activities will include a performance by the Doig River Drummers, workshops for drum making and beading, youth leadership development activities, a talent show called “Bear Flats idol” and an a look at some of the known archaeological sites.

The organization is working with the Ministry of Children and Family Development to develop a “new community-based child and family service system.”

The Minister of Children and Family Development, Mary Polack will be attending the event, Tuesday.

Erica Ness, a financial clerk with the Nenan, says the minister will be learning traditional languages and games, including a hand game, called Pugasee.

Ness says the Nenan chose to organize this event because youth needed a way to communicate with elders and learn traditional methods and ways of learning that have to be passed down from elders.

The events are currently running until Wednesday at the Bear Flats Campground beside the Peace River.

For more information on the event, people can contact 250-787-2151.
