UPDATE: The final amount raised has been announced. Over $33,700 was raised during the event, which is more than any other community with a rider in the Tour de North ride.
More than 50 arrests were made in the City of Fort St. John, Tuesday.
The arrests were made to raise money for the 6th annual Cops for Cancer Jail N’ Bail.
The amount raised from the event was over $25,000 says RCMP Constable Shawn Ingham, adding that the number is a conservative estimate and the actual amount will be calculated Thursday.
However, he says organizers have already certainly matched last year’s total.
At least two high-profile political members were arrested, MLA Pat Pimm and City Councillor Dan Davies.
Ingham says the charges varied from not giving employees enough vacation time to being too loud. The latter was the charge Davies faced.
His bail was set at $300.
He says he doesn’t think his new criminal record would affect his ability to run for the federal Conservative candidate nomination. He added that the hours he spent in jail were the ‘worst moments of his life’.
The number of persons of interest that were arrested was so high that some prisoners had to sit outside of the temporary cell.
Ingham says some people raised more than their required bail amount, with some people even doubling the amount.
