Few claims could mean no provincial money

Despite the considerable flooding the city received Thursday, the City of Fort St. John doesn’t expect it will necessarily get provincial compensation.

City officials had put out a request for people to provide them with information on damages incurred from the flood, so that it could be sent to the Provincial Emergency Program.

However, City Manager Dianne Hunter says so far only eight property owners have come forward with insurance claims.

She says that because of the wildfires occurring throughout the province, she suspects that the people affected by the fires will get priority over the flood damage in the city.

However, she adds that if enough people come forward, that could change.

The flooding was in the range of a 100 year event and although the drainage systems within the city were overwhelmed, within a couple of hours the majority of the water had drained from the streets.

City infrastructure was not considerably damaged and there was only one area of the Alaska Highway that developed a small sinkhole that was quickly repaired.

Hunter says the flood did allow the City to understand what improvements to its infrastructure may be necessary.

Residents and business owners who wish to report damages from the flood should provide a written statement, along with pictures, to City Hall by calling 250-787-8150 or by calling the Fire Hall after hours at 250-785-4333.
