Girls race self-made go karts at event

Go karts and trade skills will combine at an event held by the North East Native Advancing Society.

Several aboriginal girls between the ages of 10 and 15 from across northeastern B.C. have been building their own go karts over the past nine days in preparation for Saturday’s race, says Aimee Chalifoux, the youth and family program co-ordinator for Rising Spirit Aboriginal Youth Centre in Fort St. John.

The program teaches the girls skills in welding and how to completely disassemble and reassemble a go kart and engine. She says the program is done to help promote interest in the trades.

Groups from Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson and Chetwynd will be participating in the race, which begins at 1 p.m.

Anyone can attend the event taking place in Dawson Creek.

There will be a free bus departing from the Rising Spirit Aboriginal Youth Centre at 11:30 a.m. and returning at 4:30 p.m.
