Province and First Nation to share mine revenue

The B.C. government has signed an agreement to share the mineral tax revenue from the Mt. Milligan mine with the McLeod Lake Indian Band.

The agreement, signed Wednesday, allows both parties to directly benefit from the development of an environmentally responsible mining project, says B.C. Minister of State for Mining, Randy Hawes.

He adds that the government wants to work with other First Nations groups on further mining projects.

The Economic and Community Development Agreement allows First Nations groups to benefit both socially and economically from mining projects on their lands.

Negotiations for this type of revenue-sharing arrangement were started by the Province in October 2008 when discussing new mining projects.
