The Sweet Dreams Initiative gave a comfy thank you to the Fort St. John community with a pyjama BBQ.
The Western Financial Group held a free BBQ lunch at the Totem Mall, Thursday, as a thank you to community members that helped the initiative raise money for two local organizations.
The meat items for the BBQ had been donated by the Butcher Block and people were encouraged to wear their pyjamas to the event.
The money raised over the course of their campaign went towards the Women’s Resource Centre and Child Services to provide them with 1,000 sleep kits.
Each sleep kit provides a child at the centre with a book, toothbrush, toothpaste, nightlight, a teddy bear and a pair of pajamas, along with a thank you card and a pencil, says Connie Sal, general manager of the Western Financial Group who orchestrated the drive.
The group was able to raise $30,000 a month ahead of schedule.
Sal says the fundraising began in February but because of overwhelming community support, the goal was reached by the first week in August.
At the last City Council meeting, Mayor Bruce Lantz declared Sept. 2, 2010 as the official “Western Financial Pyjama Day”, showing the City’s support for the local cause.
