Private properties to be sold through tax sale

The City of Fort St. John will be holding its annual tax sale of various properties.

Unless delinquent property owners in Fort St. John pay up three years worth of taxes, by Monday at 10 a.m., their properties will be sold at a public auction.

The auction will start at a minimum bidding price depending on the property.

As of Sept. 9, there were 25 properties listed by the City as being up for tax sale. By Friday, that number has dropped to three.

Any successful bidder on a property will have to immediately pay the city the amount bid.

Last year, the land around the Fort Hotel went up for tax sale. If the owner doesn’t pay all taxes owing on the property by Monday, then the City will take over ownership. Mayor Bruce Lantz told Issues and Answers on Wednesday, that if that happens, the City would begin immediate remedial action to clean up the property.

The cleanup project is expected to cost approximately $250,000, which has already been put in the City’s 2010 budget.
