The Fort St. John Flint Energy Bantam “B” Flyers travelled to Jasper, Alberta over the weekend to participate in an invitational exhibition tournament hosted by Prince George Minor Hockey.
The Flyer’s team, more accustomed to the physical play of its rivals in the All Peace League, found themselves at the mercy of the officials who weren’t as supportive of their “style” of hockey. Head Coach Troy Lang, and Asst. Coach Chris Whitford encouraged the young squad to play their game, and utilized the opportunity to work on specialty teams.
Game 1 – Friday night 10 pm. The Flyers played the Edson Bantam “A” team. The Flyers played the majority of the match shorthanded serving 60 minutes in minor penalties and one game misconduct which resulted in a 4 – 3 loss. Goaltenders Evan O’Neill and Garret Whitford were outstanding in net facing a total of 65 shots combined. Brandon Howard, Alexander Breunig, and Jarod Lang scored for Fort St. John.
Game 2 – Saturday Noon. The Flyers played the Host Team, Prince George. The Flyers battled back from a 3 – 0 deficit late in the second period, to tie the game 4-4 until Prince George scored the eventual game winner with 8 minutes left in regulation. Kameron Furlong, Bruenig, Emerson Loewen, and Lang scored goals for Fort St. John while Kyle Johnson (2), Bruenig, Matthew Hiebert, Tyrell Loewen, Tyler Wood, and Devon Swanson assisted. Fort St. John served 20 minutes in minor penalties. Final Score PG – 5, Flyers – 4.
Game 3 – Saturday 6pm. The Flyers met the Edson squad for the second time. Fort St. John’s Lang, assisted by Wood, scored the first goal of the game 2 minutes into the second period. Edson responded less than a minute later to tie it up, then banged in 3 more unanswered goals in less than 4 minutes to take a commanding 4 -1 lead. Edson added 2 more goals in the third, before Lang got his second of the game, assisted by Wood to complete the scoring. Fort St. John served 22 minutes in minor penalties. Final Score Edson – 6, Fort St. John – 2.
Game 4 – Saturday 8pm. The Flyers closed out the round robin against the Prince George team. This back and forth battle seen both teams register points in each period, with Fort St. John tying the game at 5 with 30 seconds remaining in regulation time. Fort St. John’s Aiden Harris, Lang, Wood (assisted by Braden Rouble), Hiebert (assisted by Furlong), and Howard (assisted by Lang) were the point getters for the Flyers. Fort St. John received 10 minor penalties and 1 Game Misconduct in the match. Final Score PG – 5, Flyers – 5.
Game 5 – Sunday 10am. Due to a scheduling change, Fort St. John faced the Home Team, Jasper Bearcats, to close out the weekend. Jasper scored once in the second, and once in the third resulting in a 2 – 0 final score.
The All Peace League schedule has been released and regular season play will commence next week.
