Buick Creek will celebrate the grand opening of its new arena on Thursday, Oct. 28.
The new arena has seating for 200 spectators, as well as heated change rooms and a concession area. The new facility will also be wheelchair accessible. During winter the arena will be used for indoor ice related activities and throughout the summer the facility can be used for indoor sports and local community events.
The decision to build the new arena was made through a referendum held in 2006. It is a partnership project including the Buick Creek Community Club, the Peace River Regional District and School District 60. The project cost $5.2 million which was provided by the Peace River Regional District, the Ministry of Community and Rural Development- Towns for Tomorrow Program, and the Western Economic Diversification- Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program. School District 60 contributed the land that the arena has been built on.
The grand opening will get started at 3 p.m. and will include speakers, presentations and a ceremonial puck drop. This will be followed by a barbeque sponsored by Canadian Crude Separators. Those attending are encouraged to bring their skates because there will be a community skate following the ceremonies.
