Province offers rural Internet grants

Residents in rural and remote areas of B.C. can now apply for funding to bring broadband Internet access to their area.

Network B.C. is accepting applications for its Connecting Citizens Grant program. The Province has allocated $1.5 million towards the grant program with each individual project allowed to apply for up to $50,000 in funding.

According to the application guidelines, applicants must be a “legally registered entity.” The groups that can apply for the grants include community broadband organizations, aboriginal organizations or registered societies. Individual residents can not apply by themselves.

The money would be available to improve or create local infrastructure necessary to provide businesses and homes with Internet connections.

According to Network B.C., 93 per cent of residents have high speed Internet access.
