Second senior targeted in phone scam

Grande Prairie RCMP are warning residents to be cautious of phone scams after another grandparent was contacted.

Police say a female resident received a call from a male that claimed to be the woman’s grandson, saying he was in a Montreal jail. He then asked her for $3,200 for bail.

After receiving the call, the woman called her son and found out that her grandson was actually working in the local area and was not in Montreal.

This is the second complaint to police in the past week regarding this type of scam. Beaverlodge RCMP received a similar report last Thursday in which a caller had contacted a senior claiming to be the person’s grandson.

Police say residents that receive a call from someone asking for money should always question the person and should report any type of suspicious incident to police and the Anti-Fraud Centre.
