Fort St. John RCMP now confirm they responded to an incident involving a suicidal male in the area of 81A St. and 89 Ave.

Police say they responded to the call at around 12:30 p.m.  The man involved apparently said he might use a firearm to hurt himself

Police were able to make contact with the 55 year-old Fort St. John resident one hour later with the help of his family members.

They say they were able to convince the man to leave the residence and he was taken into custody without incident.  He was subsequently taken to the hospital for a psychiatric assessment.

Several firearms were taken from the residence and police say they are continuing their investigation.  However, they add that no criminal charges are pending.

Duncan Cran Elementary School also went into lockdown mode during the incident.

According to School District 60 Superintendant Larry Espe, police notified the school’s principal just before 1 p.m. that all the children should be brought inside.  Espe says the school then went into lockdown.  The lockdown lasted approximately 40 minutes until police informed school officials that the area around the school was safe.

Espe says that when the school goes into lockdown, students stay in their classrooms with their teachers, the doors are locked and the principal and vice principal circle the perimeter to ensure all students are inside.
