Charlie Lake meeting draws some heat

A proposed bylaw about future subdivisions had some Charlie Lake residents questioning current services.

The Peace River Regional District held a meeting at the Charlie Lake Community Hall Monday night where it had a third reading of a proposed bylaw to create a new zone for potential sewer service within the North Peace Fringe Area. The bylaw would encourage compact development and development on vacant land within the municipality for any new subdivisions.

The proposed bylaw would create a minimum land parcel size for new subdivisions, depending on whether they are connected to a community sewage system or not.

However, residents who attended the meeting did not feel the new bylaw suited their needs and felt that the District should instead focus on servicing existing infrastructure, says Director of Area C Arthur Hadland.

Residents are more concerned about having a sewer system in place to service all current lots within the Grandhaven and Clairmont area, says Hadland. He adds that the lack of service is a serious issue because it could pose future health problems for residents.

Due to the negative feedback about the existing infrastructure, Hadland says he has formed a working group with some of the community members to discuss a plan to better service the area, as well as to examine a potential new model for governing their local area.

He says the two possible proposals may appear as referendum questions at the next election, however he adds with the possible changes, residents do have to realize the money for these changes will have to come from somewhere.

The current proposed bylaw still needs to be voted upon by the District before coming into effect.
