According to a press release from Shell Canada, a contractor was found unconscious in a building at Shell’s Ground Birch gas plant. The facility is currently under construction. The man was found Wednesday evening.

Company officials say medical assistance was provided on scene and the man was taken to the Dawson Creek hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The RCMP have contacted the person’s next of kin, but the individual’s name has not been released.

Shell Canada President and Country Chair Lorraine Mitchelmore says, “this is a sad time for all concerned. I extend my personal condolences to the individual’s family, friends and colleagues for their loss.”

The incident is still under investigation and the RCMP are working with the B.C. Coroners Service and Work Safe B.C.

Company officials say there is no threat to the public.
