Premier Gordon Campbell announces resignation

It’s a bomb shell coming out of Victoria, Wednesday.

After nine years in office and three election victories, in the past decade, Premier Gordon Campbell has announced he’s resigning.

In his speech, he says he has asked the Liberals to hold a leadership convention at the earliest possible date.

Under intense pressure to quit because of the public outrage over the Harmonized Sales Tax, Campbell shuffled his cabinet last week and then tried to gain back voters with a new year promise of a 15 per cent income tax cut in a province wide televised address.

However, none of those moves worked and there’s speculation there was a growing number in his caucus that were calling for him to step aside.

Campbell has been Premier since 2001 when the Liberals won 77 of 79 seats in the legislature.

However, he was re-elected with diminishing majorities in 2005 and 2009 and right now is at at all-time low in the public opinion polls.
