The residential care centre is restricting visitors for the time being, due to an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness known as viral gastroenteritis. The outbreak of the virus is affecting both staff and patients at the centre.

According to Eryn Collins, a communications officer with Northern Health, the virus’ main symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as a fever.

The virus is considered highly contagious which is why visitor restrictions are in place at the Centre.

Although circumstances may seem severe, Collins says that this type of event is not rare and is often seen taking place during times where viruses are easily spread.

Collins says the spread of disease is quite common during this time of the year due to the high amount of travel taking place.

Symptoms for viral gastroenteritis last approximately one to three days, so if people have experienced any of the symptoms, they are advised to stay away from school or work. If the symptoms do not improve, visit www.healthlinkbc.ca or call 811.

Northern Health will provide an update on the Rotary Manor restrictions on Friday.
