The Blizzard Bike Club had an exciting 2010 with Richard Woodsâ€™ National Time Trial silver medal, Robert Martens Gold Criterium silver medal and Peter Kingâ€™s excellent top ten finish at the National Para Cycling Championships. Colter Young raced the pro / am Mt. Hood stage race in the US. Stephen Ferris raced the BC Championships and Pro/Am races in Victoria and Vancouver.
The club won the All-Peace Challenge Cup series yet again but in a close race with Grande Prairie. Kevin Shaw and Jolea Bilodeau were was the dominant Blizzard riders in club events. Eighty members joined the club but overall participation in the 96 club events was down from last year despite superb weather and new cycling routes.
The season started out March 7th with thirteen riders out under wet but warm conditions for the first race of the season. Gary Hilderman won the tough Roubaix Cup three race series under very civilized conditions with only one â€˜coldâ€™ stage. He won the first and third stages to pick up his first Roubaix Cup. Kevin Shaw won the second Roubaix cup stage.
Pat Ferris won the The Spring Stage race winning four of the eight stages. George Gamble was second and won stage 5 with Les Elliott third and stage 7, and Kevin Shaw 4th winning Stage 8, the â€˜Rocky Road Raceâ€™. Jolea Bilodeau swept the Womenâ€™s Spring Stage race stages as well as almost winning a couple of stages, overall.
Colter Young was the â€˜King of Springâ€™ on the new Montney Highway circuit ahead of George Gamble and â€˜Queen of Springâ€™ Jolea Bilodeau.
The clubâ€™s Duathlon series was well attended with Jolea Bilodeau won 4 and Pat Ferris winning of the six races. Five local Triathletes went on to complete the Penticton Ironman in late August.
The Cactus trails were a busy place with weekly mountain bike events from June to snowfall. Gary Hilderman won 2 races as well as the Club Championship race and Pat Ferris won 5 races.
Kevin Shaw won the club championship race on a new course June 7 in an exciting break on the final Montney hill, ahead of Pat Ferris and George Gamble.
June 11, Stephen Ferris turned in a 22:17 minutes for the fastest time of 2010 on the Baldonnel circuit. He did not have a fast enough time to win the big prize that goes to the rider that beats the 21:06 course record, though.
Kevin Shaw and Sandy McDonald won the third Annual Terry Stone Memorial time trial in Hudsonâ€™sâ€™ Hope. Pat Ferris won the S & S Turbines Hill climb and Jay Morrison won the final road race, the â€˜Race of the Fallen Leavesâ€™ which sealed the Blizzardsâ€™ Challenge Cup repeat win.
At Nationals in Devon, Richard Wood brought home a silver medal in the menâ€™s 60+ individual time trial. Peter King competed at the National Para Cycling Championships on the road and velodrome in Quebec.
Kevin Shaw dominated the fall cyclo-series with six wins of the eight race series. Pat Ferris won his age class at the Hood River, Oregon cyclo cross race in September.
The Blizzards were 14:01 minutes behind the 5th place Redbridge Cycling Club from England for 6th spot in the World Masters Time Trial Challenge. The BC Vets of Vancouver Island won with a total time of 1:32:05 hours.
Wim Kok and Eric Snucins both covered hundreds of kmâ€™s to complete the local Randonneur events and plan to do the P-B-P in France, next year.
