First place finish for Bantam Flyers

**Submitted

The Fort St. John Flint Energy Bantam “B” Flyers were finally rewarded for their hard work, and finished in 1st place in the Grande Prairie Bantam Tournament over the weekend.

On Friday night, the Flyers faced the GP Hawks in round robin play and came out on top with a 5 – 2 win. Bradyn Rouble and Tyler Wood netted 2 goals apiece, with Aiden Harris getting a goal and an assist. Brandon Howard and Emerson Loewen had assists.

Saturday morning saw the Flyers playing the second host team, the Grande Prairie Sabres. The back and forth game had both teams leading at different stages of the game, however the Sabres held on for the 5 – 4 win. Howard had 2 goals in the game, Kameron Furlong was accredited with 2 assists, Bradley Dixon and Brayden Hickey each got a goal, while Devin Swanson and Rouble had an assist apiece.

Later on in the afternoon, the Flint Energy Flyers tangled with the Wembley Wildcats. The Fort St. John squad thought they were playing an adult team, as the “Giants” as they were referred to towered over the flyers…and their coaches. The Flyers trailed 2 – 0 after the first period, 5 – 3 after 40 minutes, but battled back in the third with 2 more goals to end the game in a 5 – 5 draw. Jarod Lang and Furlong led the way with a goal and an assist each, Wood, Swanson, and Dixon recorded a goal apiece, and Hickey with an assist.

The final round robin game for the Flyers came early Sunday morning against the Manning Comets. The Flyers’ Lang drew first blood with assists from Loewen and Wood. Wood added another from Lang 3 minutes later. Lang received his third point of the game when Defenceman James Bowie scored the eventual game winner at the 15:34 mark of the second period. Final score 3 – 2.

The 2 – 1 – 1 record was enough to put the Flint Energy Bantam Flyers in first place after round robin, and set the stage for a rematch against the team they tied the day before. The Flyers, intimidated by the physical size of some of the Wembley Wildcats, got off to a slow start and found themselves battling a 3 – 0 deficit midway through the game. Dixon found the back of the net late in the second assisted by Howard, then Dixon struck once again early into the third period with Furlong assisting to spark some life back into the “Blue / White Dynamite”. Kyle Johnson assisted Howard to tie the game at 3 apiece, and with 8 minutes remaining in regulation, Johnson assisted Howard as he put away the Game Winner. Final score Fort St. John Flyers – 4, Wembley Wildcats – 3.

Congratulations Troy Lang, Chris Whitford, and the Flint Energy Bantam “B” Flyers on your successful weekend!!
