A local group is requesting a public health inquiry into the oil and gas industry.

Lois Hill, Director of the Peace Environment and Safety Trustee Society, requested
a public health inquiry Thursday, at the Peace River Regional District.

Hill hopes the inquiry will show whether the oil and gas companies properly protect the surrounding public’s health from the emission of dangerous chemicals, including Sour Gas.

Sour Gas contains significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide, a chemical which is highly toxic. Hill believes that 30 per cent of gas emitted from oil and gas plants is sour.

After receiving legal help, Hill presented a letter to the Regional District explaining why there should be a public inquiry. The letter is to be submitted to various provincial ministries as well as the Oil and Gas Commission.

The Regional District decided to support Hill’s cause. A motion was passed to provide a letter of support, requesting for a full public inquiry into safety issues involved in oil and gas development.

The Peace Environment and Safety Trustee Society already requested a public inquiry, after a gas leak in Pouce Coupe in 2009. The request was denied by the provincial government.
