Home run visit for Fort St. John

Fort St. John is going to be visited by baseball royalty.

One of the all time great Major League baseball players, Ferguson Arthur “Fergie” Jenkins, is coming to Fort St. John on Feb. 21.

Jenkins will be visiting the city as part of a 23 city, 8 province tour in honour of Black History Month. Canada Post will also be celebrating the month by publishing Jenkins’ picture on a commemorative stamp.

Residents will be able to meet Jenkins at the Lido between 4 and 6 p.m. They are being encouraged to don baseball paraphernalia as Jenkins will be signing autographs.

Jenkins will be giving a speech and will discuss the honour of having his picture on a stamp. He is also expected to talk about his heritage. Jenkins’ father is a native of Barbados and his mother was involved in the Underground Railroad.

Jenkins is considered one of the greatest Canadian baseball players of all time. He was a three-time all-star, a Cy Young award winner and was the first Canadian player to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. In 2007, Jenkins was also awarded the Order of Canada.

Fort St. John should consider itself lucky as it is the only city in the Peace River region being visited by the Hall of Famer.
