Tumbler Ridge diversifies revenue with community forest

The District of Tumbler Ridge will be securing additional revenue along with help for area sawmills with a new community forest.

Approximately 22,000 hectares of Crown land will be secured through a 25 year agreement that will allow the District to harvest 20,000 cubic metres of timber each year.

The Crown land is within the Dawson Creek timber supply area and the District is expected to use the forest for economic opportunities and controlling boundary wildfires.

The economic opportunities for the District include supporting current jobs by using the harvested timber to supply the West Fraser and Canfor sawmills in Chetwynd and increasing the District’s revenue.

District officials say pine beetle infested timber will also be used for bioenergy production to give the area an addition power supply in case of outages.
