A local Fort St. John girl will be wearing a gunny sack to school if she meets her $10,000 fundraising goal for an African vocational school.

Kerri-Jo Fehr has chosen to raise money for a vocational training school in Niger – a country with one of the lowest Human Development Indexes on earth – that teaches girls math skills, how to read and write and helps perfect their French language skills. The girls are also taught how to sew and knit.

The 17 year-old student at North Peace Secondary School says she decided to begin the fundraiser after she realised that so many girls put too much emphasis on what dress they are going to buy for prom or who has the best dress.

She says another reason she chose to do the fundraiser was to help other students believe they can also make a difference and it doesn’t have to be by wearing a gunny sack.

So far, Fehr has raised more than $6,000. She says she received two large donations from businesses on Tuesday. Urban Systems donated $1,000 to her cause and she says another business gave her $5,000.

As a final touch, Fehr says that if she raises the full amount, she and her mother will sew the gunny sack dress themselves.

Anyone interested in donating to Fehr, can make cheques payable to “Kerri-Jo’s Gunny Sack Prom”, which can be sent to c/o Jason Pederson (8308 90 Ave. Fort St. John, V1J 6M3), or can make a deposit into the account set up at the Fort St. John Credit Union.
