City holding public meeting on operating budget, tax rate

The City of Fort St. John will be holding a public meeting on the 2011 proposed operating budget and property tax rate.

As part of the property tax rate changes, Council has decided to adjust the tax ratios for light industrial, business and residential properties over a five-year period. Light industrial and business property owners will see a decrease in their tax rates over that time and residential property owners will see an increase phased in over the next five years.

The increase in 2011 for residents means that someone who has a property assessed at $350,000 in both 2010 and 2011 would pay an additional $14.

The meeting will be held at City Hall on March 30 from 6 until 8 p.m. and residents are encouraged to attend to obtain more information about the tax rate and operating budget, as well as to have any concerns addressed.
