Construction on Tumbler Ridge wind farm set for upcoming summer

A presentation on a large wind farm being built near Tumbler Ridge was made to the Peace River Regional District on Thursday.

The presentation centered on the construction of the 142 megawatt Quality Wind Project and the timeline set out for the project’s completion.

Project Manager Steve Owens and Manager/Public Consultant Jason Tusor discussed various matters relating to the project, including construction, project timelines and the company’s relationship with different businesses in the region.

According to Tusor and Owens, Capital Power has already selected Mortenson construction as a primary contractor for the renewable energy project.

They said that Mortensen is one of Canada’s leading renewable energy construction companies and is experienced in working in mountainous areas and under extreme weather conditions. Furthermore, the company has already completed surveying and flagging the construction sites. It has also begun to clear and map out roads to the construction areas.

The company has made it clear that working with local businesses is one of its key priorities. It is currently working with Hemmera on environmental concerns, AMEC Arcas on archaeology subjects and TECO on forestry matters.

Tusor and Owens said Capital Power is working with these companies to ensure all regulations are abided by and met.

Moreover, they said the company is frequently in communication with the RCMP and Fire Department in Tumbler Ridge, STARS air ambulance and local healthcare officials to ensure all necessary safety precautions are met.

Excavation and concrete pouring is expected to begin in this summer, with the transportation, erection and commissioning of the turbines scheduled for 2012.

Once constructed, the project will sell electricity generated by the wind farm to B.C. Hydro under a 25-year Electricity Purchase Agreement.
