B.C. NDP leadership candidate Mike Farnworth has responded to concerns about a metaphor he used, which included Fort St. John.

Farnworth’s comments were made at a leadership debate. According to the Penticton Western News, Farnworth had said, "You can have an idiot elected from Fort St. John and just because they’re from rural B.C. doesn’t mean they’re going to be a particularly good premier. Likewise, you could have somebody from Vancouver who might not be that good a leader in terms of even dealing with urban issues."

Farnworth said that his intention was not to single out Fort St. John or the people in the city. However, he said that he was only making a point that just because someone is from a particular area does not mean that person is the best to represent the area’s particular views.

He said his comment was in response to someone stating the NDP was only an urban party that could not properly represent rural interests. He does admit that he should not have used the term idiot and that he thinks Fort St. John is actually a great place.

When asked why none of the leadership debates took place in the Peace River area, Farnworth replied…

However, Farnworth points out that he was the minister who had negotiated the first Fair Share agreements in the Peace River area.

Farnworth also said that when he is leader, he looks forward to visiting the region.

The leadership election takes place Saturday.
