Students given chance to be lab assistant

Northern Health is offering students an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a medical lab.

School District #60 students are being invited to join the Fort St. John Medical Laboratory during its celebration of National Medical Laboratory Week, with its first ever “Laboratory Professional for a Day” essay contest.

Students from grades three through twelve are invited to submit a 200-400 word essay explaining why they would like to be lab professionals for a day. They can also write about a time when a lab test made a difference in their health or the health of someone they know.

Three winners will be selected, one from grades three to six, one from grades seven to nine and one from grades ten to twelve. Winners from each category will receive the opportunity to spend four hours in the Fort St. John Hospital lab, where they will learn about testing procedures and collecting lab samples.

National Medical Laboratory week takes place from April 26-29. This year’s theme, “You Know Because We Are Here” will focus on people being able to find out if there is something wrong with their health, with the help of medical laboratory professionals.

Students’ essays can be dropped off at the Fort St. John Hospital Lab reception desk or be submitted to [email protected] by May 6, 2011.
