NEB holding public hearing regarding possible exports

One B.C. company is hoping to begin exporting Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to overseas markets.

The National Energy Board announced Tuesday it would be holding a public hearing to consider an application submitted by the B.C. LNG Export Co-Operative LLC, for a 20-year licence to export LNG from Canada to Pacific Rim markets.

The application is based on future projections, which predict a substantially increasing demand for natural gas in the Pacific Rim markets over the next 20 years.

B.C. LNG is requesting authorization to export up to 1.8 million tonnes of LNG annually.

The Board will consider several different aspects of the application, which include export markets, natural gas supply, transportation agreements and the status of regulatory authorizations. The board will also have to consider potential environmental effects of the proposed export, as well as any social effects directly related to those environmental effects.

The hearing will be open to the general public and people can participate in one of three ways, by seeking intervener status, by filing a letter or comment or by making an oral statement to the board.

Anyone wishing to intervene in the hearing or make an oral statement must file the required documents by Thursday, Sept. 1.

Online forms for all three methods of participation are available on the official NEB website.
