Another Peace Region telephone scam

The Dawson Creek RCMP has issued a public warning about a telephone scam, that goes to computer fraud.

Police say potential victims are contacted by representatives of the so-called, “Windows Centre,” and persuaded to log on to their computer in order to address alleged “reading” problems.

What follows is a 100 dollar request for a new or renewed warranty to deal with the bogus problem, and a warning, that if it’s not paid the targeted victim’s computer will crash within 48 hours.

Police say the public should be highly suspicious of any unsolicited call from someone claiming to represent a computer firm, and should avoid agreeing to give or receive any money or personal information in response to such a call.
