Upcoming events to help animals in need in Dawson Creek

This Saturday, the Dawson Creek Fire Department will host a garage sale/open house at the fire hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all the proceeds going to the SPCA branch. All sorts of items will be up for sale, though there won’t be any surplus firefighting equipment, said Capt. Rob Huttema.

There will be a barbeque, though, and a chance to tour the fire hall and get a closer look at that equipment. Huttema said if the weather cooperates, they will hook up some hoses so the kids can have some fun, too.

The biggest annual fundraiser for the BC SPCA takes place on Sept. 11 with the “Paws for a Cause: Walk for the Animals.” Residents of Dawson Creek are encouraged to pick up pledge forms at the local SPCA branch, Total Pet, and the two local veterinary clinics, and then show up at Kin Park on Sept. 11 for a day of walking, fun activities, and giveaways, all in support of helping animals in need.

Wendy Davies, manager of the local branch, said whoever raises the most pledges for the walk will be eligible for some great prizes in the categories of adult, teen and youth.

Along with the walk there will be demonstrations by the local RCMP K-9 unit, as well as agility contests and other fun activities for people and their pets to do. There will be a pet wash and nail trimming station as well as a booth for pet photos. Mr. Mikes will be on site providing a barbeque, and fire department will be on hand for this event as well offering fire truck tours.

A silent auction is also being held, and Davies said closer to the event they will have pictures of the items up for bid on BC SPCA South Peace Branch Facebook page.

Registration for the event starts at 10:30 a.m. More information can be found online at www.spca.bc.ca/walk.

Davies said they are extremely grateful for the support of the Dawson Creek Fire Department, the many local businesses supporting the Paws for a Cause walk, and the many citizens of Dawson Creek who support them.

“Having the support of the community is the only way we can be here. We’re completely not-for-profit, with no government funding, so it’s only through the support of the community that we’re able to be here to help these animals when they are in their worst spot.”
