The BC Oil and Gas Conference in Fort Nelson kicked off wednesday night with a keynote speech from well-known commentator Rex Murphy. Murphy was in Fort Nelson and spoke to conference delegates about the importance of the energy industry to the greater picture of the North American and world economies, while entertaining the audience with his unique mix of insight, humour and  political commentary.

The conference goes until Friday and is being held at the newly completed Northern Rockies Regional Recreation Complex. Premier Christy Clark will be addressing the conference Thursday, and commentator and author of the book "Ethical Oil", Ezra Levant will be speaking at the conference on Friday.

Topics being covered in the conference include the impact to communities of a transient workforce, water resource management for unconventional gas exploration, and the evolution and future of the LNG markets.

Fort Nelson has been experiencing a boom in recent years with the growth of the the Horn River Basin gas play.
