Fort St. John considers new dog park

Dog owner Amanda Wilms came before council to promote the benefits of having a dog park in the community.

She is proposing a fenced in area maintained by the city.

There would be posted open and close times, as well rules governing the behaviour of dogs and their owners.

Councillors had some concerns about who ensures that the rules are followed, but Wilms says they are generally respected by dog owners.

She compared the level of risk entering a dog park to a beach with no lifeguard, saying the users take on the responsibility themselves.

Sarah Cockerill, Director of Community Services, says that after doing research, she thinks the project should not be rushed to be completed in 2011.

She says everything from fencing and parking to lighting has to be considered.

A more detailed plan will be submitted when next year's budget is being deliberated.
