George Carlin Dies

Many considered him the dean of counterculture comedians, best known for his biting insights on life and language.

George Carlin has died in California at the age of 71.

Carlin had a history of heart trouble, and a publicist says the comic went into St. John's Health Center yesterdat afternoon, complaining of chest pain.

He died just before 6 p.m. Pacific time.

Carlin's routine called “The Seven Words You Can Never say on TV'' got him arrested in 1972 when he uttered all seven during a show in Milwaukee.

And when the routine was played on a New York radio station, it resulted in a Supreme Court ruling, upholding the government's authority, to sanction stations, for broadcasting offensive language.

He said earlier this year, that he was “perversely kind of proud'' to be “a footnote in American legal history.''

Last Tuesday, it was announced in Washington, that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize, for American Humour.
