School bus service expanded to private schools in Dawson Creek

The board approved the change to the bus routes after receiving requests from both Notre Dame School and Mountain Christian School citing various safety concerns such as exposure to cold weather in the wintertime. Previously, students from Notre Dame were dropped off and picked up at the Central Middle School campus, while students from Mountain Christian School were dropped off and picked up at the South Peace Secondary School campus.

Secretary-treasurer Gerry Slykhuis said he was aware similar requests from Ron Pettigrew Christian School had been made in the past, as students attending that school are dropped off and picked up at Canalta Elementary School. He added, operationally, extending the bus routes to the three schools would not have much of an impact, but there would be some additional costs involved.

Trustee Wayne Ezeard made the motion to extend the bus routes provided the private schools agreed to cover the extra costs, saying he believed it was an issue of the safety of the children. Trustee Judy Clavier was the lone dissenter on the board, saying while she sympathized with the safety concerns, she was hesitant to provide a service to schools that are essentially competing with the public schools in Dawson Creek for students.

The motion passed, but the board will review the decision again at the end of this school year.
