“It’s a great time, with amazing food and a great atmosphere to talk and socialize, and you can come away with some great prizes or a bit of cash from the 50/50 draw, or maybe find something you like – with the Christmas season fast approaching – that you want to bid on, and it all goes to help the emergency ward at your local hospital,” said Jerimy Earl, communications and events coordinator for the Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation.
This year, the Foundation is raising money towards an End Tidal CO2 Module, which is used to collect detailed respiratory measurements during critical stages of care, and has been identified as a top priority for the emergency ward.
The evening will feature a professionally catered, five course meal. The main course is a stuffed, one-half Cornish Hen with blackberry wine sauce, and served with sides of whipped potato and butternut puree, and ginger sesame sugar snap peas – and that’s not even mentioning the appetizers or dessert!
Items up for bid include in the auction include a spa package, tickets to comedian Jeff Foxworthy’s show at the EnCana Events Centre on March 17 that has been bundled with dinner and local accommodations, paintings by local artists, a digital camera, printer, and much, much more, all donated generously by local businesses and individuals. It’s a silent auction, but with some friendly encouragement from the Foundation’s board members to solicit bidding.
“Throughout the night we let people know what the status of the auction items are, and once we realize a few people have their eyes on a specific item, our board members will pump up the competition,” said Earl.
He said Chances always decorates their lounge to make the atmosphere very inviting.
“It’s usually something festive and seasonal. Last year, it was themed for the maternity ward (campaign), and this year I think they are going with an autumn theme.”
If the reasons mentioned above are not enough, he added the event is always a great occasion to enjoy the company of many different members of the community.
“People show up and are engrossed in conversation the whole time. In some cases they haven’t seen other people since last year’s dinner, and in other cases it’s just people touching base.”
The Hospital Foundation continues to benefit from a great partnership with Chances, which not only hosts the dinner and auction every year, but hosts poker tournaments, bingos and coin drives as well.
“They are an amazing supporter of the Foundation, and their staff and management are always keen on helping out whenever they have the chance” said Earl.
Tickets are $50 per person or $75 for a couple. Seating is limited, and the event sold out last year, so those interested in attending are encouraged to act quickly.
