Local wrestlers slam competition at Zones

In the girls division, Captain Roylene Oliarny led the Ookapics in the competition, pinning almost all her opponents, except the silver medalist, capturing her second consecutive zone championship.

Taylor McLeod also earned her second straight Zone Championship, thanks to her stellar offensive performance.

Leslie Erker continued her phenomenal season, which was her best ever in her wrestling career, winning her first ever zone gold medal, while Liz Collum also took home a gold medal.

Due to the outstanding performance from the female wrestlers in their respective weight classes, the girls secured themselves the North Central Zone Top Girl’s Team Trophy, an honour they earned for the fourth consecutive year.

With the four-peat under their belts, the girls are one year away from winning the most consecutive zone team championships ever.

The boys also got in on the success, placing fifth overall.

Connor White put on a dominant performance, disposing of numerous opponents to earn a gold medal. Devon Shelkie and Braiden MacDougall each took home silver medals, while Bert Bowes rookie Adam Becker earned himself a fifth place finish.

Fort St. John Wrestling Club head coach Paul Kalas says he was quite impressed with the results from his team, who will now shift their focus to competing in the provincial championships taking place in Duncan, B.C. in two weeks.
