RCMP encourages citizens to record serial numbers of valuables

After responding to a number of instances where break and enters and thefts have occurred, it’s been noted that few people record the serial numbers of their possessions.

RCMP note that if the serial number, make and model of an item are not recorded, there is no way to track the items back to the original owner  if police make a discovery.

Any item such as computer, television, bicycle, firearms and sporting equipment should have all of the appropriate information documented. In the case that an item is taken, if the appropriate information is given to police, it is stored in a database with the hope that it will be eventually found.

The practice is also beneficial to police as recovered property with recorded serial numbers as stolen is often a strong piece of evidence that could possibly lead to the conviction of a suspect.
